A five star property in the suburbs of Mumbai, India prides itself in having an exclusive “Convention Centre” offering conference and banquet facilities to its patrons for a large number of people. The convention centre, a ground plus one structure, houses nine conference rooms with the ground floor facility offering a combined capacity of 300 persons. This hotel is a popular destination for large multinational companies wanting to host conventions for customers and training programs for their employees due to the capacity available and its proximity to the airport.
The Existing Environment
The convention centre offers “Wi-Fi” services, on demand. During conferences they used consumer grade Wi-Fi devices. High user density conferences, approx. 100+ people, would require deployment of many Wi-Fi devices and the entire IT team would be stationed at the venue.
The consumer grade Wi-Fi devices did not meet the demand and users still experienced intermittent connectivity and poor speeds. Additionally the event used up all the resources in the IT team, creating delays in troubleshooting other areas of the IT infrastructure on the property.
“This is our challenge and can you solve this problem for us” said the IT Manager. My entire team is dedicated to the conference and even after deploying as many Wi-Fi devices we’re still having connectivity issues. Additionally, all IT tickets from the rest of the property remain unattended till the conference breaks for meals or at the end of the day.”
“We have an unhappy conference customer, my hotel infrastructure is neglected and other hotel guests go unattended”. “This is giving us a bad reputation and we’re quite apprehensive of taking large events like these”.
He had seen demonstrations of several systems including solutions from Cisco and Ruckus. When he requested for a live trial for the event, he was asked to first purchase the products. This approach of the Integrator further deterred him from the purchase.
After our presentation and technical session with the IT Manager and team, the question still remained, “Your product is new, it looks and sounds good in a demonstration but how can we be sure that it will perform in the live environment having many users”. His apprehension was justified so we offered to deploy the entire wireless infrastructure for the event, at no cost.
The event was a 3 day, on-line sales workshop for the sales team of a large multinational Pharma company. The sales force was flying in from across the nation to undergo the online training. This was a prestigious customer and they put their trust in us to deliver reliable wireless connectivity for the event.
We deployed two Jupicom API-U-D7 wireless Access Points and our JT-1000nac Controller, configured, tested and ready to go the previous day. The next day we had 90 people in attendance for the event. The event started with everyone being issued iPads for connecting to their online application. The logins done – the program started. For the next three days we had 90 people connecting to two Jupicom wireless Access Points managed by the Jupicom Network Access Controller. During the entire event there was not a single issue of connectivity or speed and there was only one member of the IT team attending who was, quite frankly, rather bored for want of anything to do, by the end of the day.
On observation, a few times during the event we found that a single Access Point was serving 55+ users. This was way above our threshold of 40 users per access point.
What followed immediately after the event was a purchase order and deployment of our wireless solution “at the earliest” as instructed by the IT Manager and with much gratitude expressed by the General Manager of the property.
We have not only earned the IT Manager’s trust but also given them the confidence to take more such high user density conference bookings without the apprehension of service delivery.
